About the Museum

The Air Force Museum of New Zealand began as a small historical centre at the former Royal New Zealand Air Force base at Wigram in 1976 and was formally established as an RNZAF museum in 1981. Over subsequent years the Museum expanded into additional hangars, eventually occupying six buildings on a thirty‑seven hectare site. In 2008 the original history gallery was redesigned to create the Horizon to Horizon gallery, and in 2013 a major extension called the Thérèse Angelo Wing opened, adding exhibition and functions space within a 6 500 square metre expansion. Today the Museum features approximately 5 000 square metres of display space and 14 000 square metres of storage and workshop facilities, accommodated by a team of professional and RNZAF staff. Entry is free for New Zealand citizens and residents, with a small charge for international visitors introduced in March 2025.

In terms of visitor experience, the Museum offers a range of self‑guided and daily guided tours (at 11 a.m., 1.30 p.m. and 3 p.m.), museum “hunts” for children, and interactivity such as the Mosquito Mission flight simulator.
