About the Museum

The Harry Bayley Observatory was officially opened in January 1963, born of a heartfelt initiative by members of the Barbados Astronomical Society in memory of the esteemed Dr. Harry Bayley. Dr. Bayley (1908–1958) was a distinguished Barbadian physician and amateur astronomer whose legacy inspires the society and the observatory to this day. Situated on land generously donated at Clapham, St. Michael, the building was brought to life through years of fundraising and public support, culminating in its dedication in early 1963.

Recent refurbishments have enhanced the experience with modern equipment, including a 16-inch Meade telescope and a Lunt 80-millimetre solar telescope, made possible through the generosity of the Sfumato Foundation. The Barbados Astronomical Society, a registered non-profit organization founded on June 12, 1956 by Dr. Bayley and Eustace Thomas, manages the observatory. Its mission includes promoting astronomy among residents and visitors, instructing members in the technical use of instruments, and sharing knowledge of upcoming astronomical phenomena.

The observatory is open to the public on select evenings—most notably on Friday nights—when presentations and telescope viewings are held under the night sky. These sessions often include lectures on celestial events followed by opportunities to view objects such as the Lagoon Nebula, Ptolemy’s Cluster, the Double Double Star, the Hercules Cluster, and even our own Moon, weather permitting.
