About the Museum

The House of Leaves Museum is housed in a two-story villa built in 1931, originally functioning as Albania’s first private obstetrics clinic. During the German occupation in World War II, the building was repurposed by the Gestapo. Following the war, it became the headquarters of the Sigurimi, Albania’s secret police, until the fall of the communist regime in 1991.

Opened to the public on May 23, 2017, the museum is dedicated to the memory of those who suffered under surveillance, arrest, prosecution, conviction, and execution during the communist era. Comprising 31 rooms, the museum offers a comprehensive look into the methods and tools of surveillance employed during this period, providing a sobering yet essential educational experience.
