Qala Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum Complex

Introduction
The Qala Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum Complex, nestled in the ancient village of Qala just outside Baku, offers visitors a captivating open‑air journey through millennia of Azerbaijani history. Located in the Khazar district, this unique destination created by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation invites travellers to explore rock‑cut dwellings, medieval underground passages, traditional handicraft workshops, a restored fortress tower, and much more—all set within a beautifully preserved historical landscape.

About the Museum
Established in 2008 under the patronage of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the Qala complex safeguards archaeological monuments from the Qala State History and Ethnography Preserve and showcases artefacts discovered across the Absheron Peninsula. Highlights include petroglyphs and gavaldash (tambourine stones), along with ceramics, jewellery, weapons, coins, and well‑preserved Bronze‑Age remains.
Visitors can wander through on‑rock and under‑rock dwellings, examine primitive wall foundations, and even follow two underground passages dating from the tenth to the fifteenth centuries that once led toward the Caspian Sea and Baku. The medieval Qala Fortress remains a standout feature: its thirteen‑point‑eight‑metre watchtower and robust stronghold house exhibits such as golden coins, a bracelet remnant, and ceramics dating from the tenth to the seventeenth centuries.
In 2011, the complex expanded to include an information centre, an ethno‑ecological centre focused on traditional arts, and the Qala Antiques Museum—a three‑storey building opened in September 2011, displaying nearly 800 items spanning Azerbaijani decorative arts and household objects from across Europe and beyond. Adjacent is a charming caravanserai‑style restaurant and café offering national cuisine in atmospheric indoor and outdoor lounges.
The site is thoughtfully designed for accessibility: paved paths, parking, electric‑vehicle garages, rental bikes and electric buses, and provisions for visitors with physical disabilities ensure a comfortable visit.
Throughout the year, the complex hosts festivals, artisan master classes, and guided tours in multiple languages, offering immersive experiences in pottery, blacksmithing, carpet weaving, silk weaving, bread baking, and more.
