About the Museum

Since its official opening in November 1988, Questacon has been a showcase for what science and technology can be when made hands‑on and accessible. The centre was gifted by the Government of Japan as part of Australia’s bicentenary celebrations and has since welcomed up to half a million visitors annually. Within its walls it houses over two hundred interactive exhibits organized into eight themed galleries.

Visitors can experience electricity, motion and magnetism in the “Zap! Clank! Pow!” gallery, while classic science experiments come to life in “Fundamentals.” The “Awesome Earth” gallery explores geology and natural disasters, featuring a Tesla coil demonstration and an earthquake simulator. In the Q Lab, guests can take part in hands‑on experiment sessions and observe the real beehive exhibit. The Shed invites creativity through experimentation with tools, science and technology. For young children up to six years old, Mini Q provides water play, a construction area and a quiet zone.

Thrill seekers will enjoy Excite@Q, where a dramatic free‑fall slide and interactive games like BATAK convey the thrill of acceleration and human reaction. Outside, the Science Garden features the NKRYPT sculpture installation—eight stainless steel poles etched with puzzles installed during Canberra’s centenary in 2013.

On top of the exhibits, Questacon features live science theatre performances by its own troupe, the “Excited Particles.” These shows include demonstrations, discussions and puppet performances tailored for families and school groups.

Questacon also develops and showcases travelling exhibitions, such as “Australia in Space,” which explores the nation’s role in space innovation and includes hands‑on modules covering launch, orbit and downstream applications.

Beyond its inner walls, Questacon reaches communities across Australia through outreach programmes like the Shell Questacon Science Circus. Each year this touring initiative visits remote and regional areas, engages over one hundred thousand people, travels approximately twenty‑five thousand kilometres, and delivers workshops for teachers and hands‑on science shows in many communities.
