Maria Rova, originally from the United States, integrated into a Fijian family and drew inspiration from her late mother‑in‑law’s Vatulele heritage. The studio sources its traditional barkcloth—known as masi—from women in Ekubu, Vatulele, keeping alive ancient cultural craftsmanship.
Artists at Sigavou combine traditional and contemporary techniques, creating pieces on both barkcloth and Habutai silk. The silk paintings use the French “serti” method, employing resist outlines to preserve vibrant colours; barkcloth works blend earthy tradition with creative innovation.
