About the Museum

Opened in October 1995, the Centro Cultural Borges occupies more than ten thousand square metres inside the historic Galerías Pacífico building—a structure originally completed in the late nineteenth century and declared a National Historic Monument in 1989.

This cultural centre honours the legacy of Argentina’s beloved writer Jorge Luis Borges. It functions as a dynamic platform for the creation, reflection, and gathering around contemporary culture. The centre presents a rich and varied programme, including exhibitions, performances, seminars, film screenings, theatre, music, dance, literary events, educational workshops, and conferences. It also houses a cinema and hosts events ranging from visual arts to tango performances.

The Centro Cultural Borges reopened under federal management in March 2025, after a two‑year closure prompted by the pandemic. It now features thirteen exhibition spaces, three performance halls, and a small open‑access library. The centre supports rotating exhibitions and programmes—recent offerings have included a tribute to the folk singer Mercedes Sosa, an exhibition dedicated to Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes, and a display by Diana Schufer titled Las palabras se las lleva el viento, in dialogue with the works of Jorge Luis Borges.

The centre is integrated into the Galerías Pacífico’s visually rich environment: visitors can admire the building’s iconic dome, adorned with murals by renowned artists Antonio Berni, Lino Enea Spilimbergo, Juan Carlos Castagnino, Demetrio Urruchúa, and Manuel Colmeiro. Additionally, the centre includes MATRIA, the Market of Traditional Artisans and Argentine Innovators, which offers a rotating selection of artisan crafts from across Argentina.
